Weird baby gift from another culture?
A friend of my husband’s is Filipino and he gave us a bizarre baby gift. It’s a statue of a little boy and supposedly it is supposed to be a likeness of our child. It’s a custom that we are supposed to protect it and take care of it until he’s older, then we are to give it to him so he can take care of it himself. Then, when he dies, he is supposed to be buried with it.
The statue itself is horribly ugly and cheesy- like a cheap Precious Moments figurine. We don’t really want it in our house. But if we get rid of it or break it, are we wishing some kind of bad luck on our son? It’s not our cultural or religious belief that it holds some sort of special power, but it’s creepy and we don’t know what to do with it.

Back of the top shelf of the closet.
I used to buy my mother Precious Moments figures. Trust me, they’re not cheap.
Breaking it or getting rid of it will in no way affect your son.
Sounds spiritistic to me, I wouldn’t keep it.
get rid of it lady ..
it’s all crap there is no such thing as statues of bad luck ..
I honestly don’t think it’ll do anything to him if you get rid of it. If you give it away or break it, I think that might be the best thing to do. If you don’t want it, then it is your choice to get rid of it.
proudly display it. stop thinking of how it looks, thats just rude
wow… I think it is beautiful that they got you a gift that they found to be meaningful. Save it for your baby and when it is older you can explain it to them.
Put it in a box of keepsake things for the baby such as cards, the medical bracelets from the hospital, etc etc.
